Engineers at the Centre D’ELectronique de l’Armement (CELAR)-an organization within the French Ministry of Defence and a technical test and evaluation center for communications, information security, and electronic warfare-sought products and services to help them advance their software defined radio (SDR) technology and software communication architecture (SCA) capabilities.

CELAR personnel found a solution at Antycip, Spectrum Signal Processing Inc.’s European distributor, with which they placed an order for multiple flexComm SDR-3002 International MILCOM Rapid-Prototyping and Development Platform (IMRDP) systems.

The flexComm SDR-3002 systems will enable CELAR engineers to test waveforms and radios for SCA compliance. Antycip and Spectrum Signal Processing also will deliver training and engineering services over a period of nine months, according to CELAR’s $850,000 contract with the companies.

“The CELAR is recognized in France as the center of excellence for military communications, and is one of the most capable organizations in this technical area in Europe,” Dan Simard, managing director of Spectrum Signal Processing (U.K.) Limited, says.

The SDR-3002 IMRDP is a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) solution targeted at international military communications programs. The system includes a “RF to Ethernet” processing system and includes sample application software that supports frequency agile operation, aiding the CELAR in rapid prototyping and the development and deployment of wideband and narrowband waveforms.

The SDR-3002 also features an SCA core framework, an SCA development environment with code-generation tools, a real-time operating system, and Spectrum’s quicComm hardware abstraction layer that facilitates algorithm partitioning and programming.
