Engineers at the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center at Robins Air Force Base, Ga., sought assistance in upgrading the AN/ALQ-161A defensive suite on the B-1B Lancer strategic jet bomber.
The U.S. Air Force personnel elicited the help of engineers at EDO Corp. in New York, issuing multiyear awards for upgrading and maintaining the aircraft’s defenses. Work on these awards, which total $16 million, are scheduled to be completed by December 2008.
EDO engineers will upgrade the advanced digital radar frequency memory (DRFM) technique generator at the core of the defensive suite. Its function is to store threatening signals and reproduce them in a manner that deceives enemy radars.
“The AN/ALQ-161A defensive avionics suite is one of the most comprehensive electronic counter-measure packages ever built,” James M. Smith, EDO’s chief executive officer, says. “While the original engineering concepts are sound, there are many benefits to be gained by upgrading hardware and software that was developed in the 1980s. We expect this work to yield dramatic improvements in system performance.”
