Executives at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Washington needed a testing, inspection, and certification service provider to serve as certification agency for its Visual Guidance Lighting Equipment Approval program (VGLEAP). After investigating the available options, they selected Intertek Group plc, in Boxborough, Mass.

The VGLEAP program calls for the testing and certification of lighting and visual aid equipment, such as runway approach lighting, to applicable FAA standards for safety, performance, and quality.

As part of the testing and inspection for the VGLEAP program, Intertek engineers evaluate airport visual aid equipment to ensure it has been manufactured in accordance with applicable FAA specifications. The testing and inspection of these products provide FAA executives with independent verification of product quality, helping to bolster safe airport operations.

“By partnering with Intertek for the testing and certification of the approach lighting systems, the Navigation Services Organization of the Federal Aviation Administration can focus its efforts toward creating new specifications and the commissioning of approach installations,” says David Edwards, general manager for Intertek’s Lighting Group.
