Engineers at Science Technical Center (NTC), a systems integrator in Kazakhstan, sought radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology for a cargo-monitoring system for the Customs Control Agency (CCA) of Kazakhstan.

NTC engineers found the necessary RFID cargo monitoring technology at Hi-G-Tek in Rockville, Md. Hi-G-Tek develops RFID sensing and control solutions for tracking high-value cargo and sensitive materials.

NTC’s engineers built the company’s Automatic Delivery Control System (ADCS) around Hi-G-Tek’s RFID technology. The CCA uses the ADCS at several major Kazakhstani border checkpoints between China and Russia, securing roughly 4,000 miles.

CCA personnel use a combination of Hi-G-Tek outdoor data readers, handheld readers, and reusable Hi-G-Locks to secure and track containers and trucks traveling through the country. The Hi-G-Locks not only secure container doors, but also confirm loads electronically through a programmed cargo manifest.

On-board sensors monitor the container doors and automatically warn personnel of attempts to tamper with locks. This information then relays via the reader network to NTC’s management software, which records the electronic manifest captured by the Hi-G-Tek RFID technology during a truck’s entry into the country. The software provides real-time sensor information while the cargo is in transit, enabling Kazakhstani officials to act immediately in the event of a security breach.

“NTC’s integrated system incorporated an x-ray inspection system, information monitors, a mobile radiation control laboratory, and the cargo management and control solution using Hi-G-Tek’s wireless active-RFID technology,” says Micha Auerbach, founder and chief technology officer of Hi-G-Tek.

“This provided Kazakhstan with the solution to guarantee the security of cargo traveling through the country,” Auerbach continues. “In addition, it has automated the registration, control, and tracking of all cargo-related travel, producing significant labor savings due to the reduction of manual inspections at border checkpoints.”
