Experts in the U.S. Army 4th Infantry Division wanted a way to analyze explosive blasts that cause brain injuries. They opted to work with BAE Systems of Rockville, Md.

BAE Systems engineers, in cooperation with the Army, developed the Headborne Energy Analysis and Diagnostic System (HEADS). To date, 5,500 HEADS have been delivered to the Program Executive Office Soldier for distribution to Army personnel.

HEADS incorporates accelerometer and pressure sensor technology capable of detecting and recording the impacts that soldiers sustain in combat. The HEADS unit mounts to the inside the shell of Advanced Combat and Combat Vehicle Crewman helmets, but does not get in the user’s way.

Scientists say HEADS data will help them build better helmets and devise better treatments for mild brain injuries. Work on the contract is being performed at the BAE Systems facilities in Jessup, Pa., and Phoenix.
