Officials at Sky Computers in Chelmsford, Mass., are introducing the LightningBolt embedded computer that offers scalability, reliability, and price/performance for demanding military and aerospace applications. The 6U VME single-board computer is compatible with Sky’s previous SKYbolt family of embedded computers. Users can upgrade to the LightningBolt family without re-writing software. The LightningBolt single-board computer uses the 1.2 GHz PowerPC MPC 7448 microprocessor and the ANSI/VITA standard SKYchannel interconnect fabric. The SKYvec software development environment provides tools for complex multiprocessor programming. LightningBolt offers 38.4 billion floating-point operations per second per 6U VME slot; boots in 10 seconds for startup and initialization; and offers as many as 64 processors per system and as much as 2 gigabytes of SDRAM solid-state memory per 6U module.
