BAE Systems to rewire world's oldest commissioned warship in major renovation of HMS Victory

PORTSMOUTH, England, 13 July 2011. Ship systems experts at BAE Systems in Farnborough, England, are replacing the electrical wiring and performing many other detailed tasks as part of the biggest renovation of the world's oldest commissioned warship, the Royal Navy's HMS Victory, since work was done to repair damage to the ship after the landmark Battle of Trafalgar more than 200 years ago. The Victory was to the Napoleonic Wars era what USS Missouri was to World War II -- one of the period's largest, most heavily armed, and most formidable ocean-going vessels.

Mathematical proof techniques, automated requirements tracing lead trends in software verification tools

Product intelligence -- Complex application software increasingly is finding its way into mission- and life-critical applications like medical equipment, surveillance and reconnaissance systems, and even high-end passenger cars. Despite the importance of this software, however, much of today's sophisticated code is developed in somewhat of a haphazard manner.

A military show, Paris is not

Flying the black pizza box: a new flavor of small UAV

Last-minute deals at Farnborough bring total passenger aircraft sales at the show to about 835

FARNBOROUGH, England, 23 July 2010. As of noon local time at Farnborough Friday, 14 more passenger aircraft were ordered since the last report, which by rough count brings the total number of commercial aircraft sold during the show to 835. On Friday French carrier Air Austral ordered two Boeing 777-200LR widebody jetliners for delivery in mid-2011 and 2010. Air Austral already operates three 777-200ERs and two 777-300ERs. Eurofighter remains victim of timing and circumstance as it competes for international jet fighter deals

THE FARNBOROUGH BLOG, 22 July 2010. The Eurofighter Typhoon is arguably one of the finest jet fighters in the world today. With air-to-air, and air-to-ground capability, advanced avionics, and unmatched maneuverability, this high-performance tactical jet is a favorite the air forces of Austria, Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Still the fighter jet and its makers find themselves in an awkward position when it comes to export sales.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner: has there ever been an airplane more over-hyped than this?

THE FARNBOROUGH BLOG, 21 July 2010. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner was supposed to create the biggest buzz here at the Farnborough International Airshow in Farnborough, England. It flew in Sunday to great fanfare, and then flew out again halfway through Tuesday, leaving 3 1/3 days of one of the largest air shows in the world 787-less. Okay, I know this airplane is important. It's made of composites for fuel economy and range; has cabin environmental controls that promise to make long-haul passenger flights merely miserable, rather than horrible; it has very nice windows that darken on command; it's a lean, mean, green, environmental machine.

Widebody jet sale blowout so far fails to materialize at Farnborough: market still somewhat cautious

THE FARNBOROUGH BLOG, 20 July 2010. So we're finished with the first day of the Farnborough International Airshow, and we had some big aircraft sales, but not the big blowout in widebody aircraft that I had been expecting. More than 200 airplanes were sold at Farnborough on Monday, and 41 of those were widebodies -- Boeing 777s and Airbus A330s -- but I'm hoping for more. Experts say to watch the number of commercial passenger jets sold at Farnborough. If these numbers are in the hundreds, then we might have turned the corner on the aerospace economic downturn. We're nearly there, but just barely.

Farnborough: First-day sales of 212 commercial jetliners may mean commercial aerospace is back on track

FARNBOROUGH, England, 20 July 2010. The first day of the Farnborough International Airshow in Farnborough, England, saw a flurry of passenger aircraft-buying activity, as four major commercial aircraft manufacturers announced purchases of 214 commercial jetliners -- 41 of them widebodies. Boeing and Airbus sold 207 of those aircraft at Farnborough Monday, which more than doubles their purchases at the Paris Air Show one year ago. Paris and Farnborough stage air shows on alternating years, and are two of the largest air shows in the world, which often see major aircraft purchases.

European flight simulator designers blend robotics and practice cockpits to cut costs of full-motion simulation

FARNBOROUGH, England, 17 July 2010. European flight simulator designers are creating cost-effective full-motion flight simulators for helicopter pilots by using a heavy-duty industrial robot to provide motion to the simulator's cockpit. Simulation and training experts from helicopter services and training company Heli Aviation GmbH in Wallerstein, Germany; the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen Germany; and industrial robot specialist KUKA in Augsburg, Germany, are designing a helicopter flight simulator called the Heli Trainer that uses a KUKA robot to move the simulator's cockpit as it emulates the motion of flight.

Many of the latest jet fighters -- Russian T-50, Chinese J-15, and U.S. F-35 -- to be no-shows at Farnborough

THE FARNBOROUGH BLOG, 14 July 2010. Some people go to air shows to see pretty aircraft interiors and the flight-demonstration teams. I go there to see the latest, meanest jet fighters screaming across the sky -- the louder, the better. I can't help it; I like big, loud machines. Like most guys, I'm really an eight-year-old at heart, so give me those fighter planes! Unfortunately for me, the Farnborough International Airshow next week will be a mixed bag for the fighter fan.
