Navy officials awarded Clear Align a contract to develop what company officials say is the first common fiber optic test kits naval aviation. Clear Align’s complex kits integrate test fiber optic inspection equipment and aircraft specific adapters for fiber optic testing capability to naval aircraft operating from aircraft carriers or from remote bases, Clear Align officials say.

SAIC to build prototype ASW deep-sea sonar system that exploits the deep sound channel

SAN DIEGO, 13 Jan. 2012. Undersea warfare experts at Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) in McLean, Va., are developing deep-sea anti-submarine warfare (ASW) surveillance technology to protect Navy aircraft carriers and their escort ships from quiet enemy attack submarines while the carriers are operating in the open ocean. The new sonar equipment will operate at extreme ocean depths in the so-called "deep sound channel" to detect quiet enemy submarines lurking overhead. SAIC is doing the work under terms of a 15-month $10.6 million contract modification announced Thursday from The Space and Naval Warfare Systems (SPAWAR) Center Pacific in San Diego.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., 11 Jan. 2012. NASA has contracted a.i. solutions Inc. of Lanham, Md., to provide integrated services for the preparation and launch of NASA's next generation of scientific and exploration spacecraft under the agency's Launch Services Program (LSP). The Expendable Launch Vehicle Integrated Support 2 (ELVIS 2) contract, valued at up to $138.1 million, features a two-month, phase-in period beginning Feb. 2012, followed by a one-and-a-half-year base period from April 1, 2012, through Sept. 30, 2013.

Special Ops forces tap DRS to design and build SPOTR verification tool for laser designators

MAC DILL AFB, Fla., 6 Jan. 2012. Electro-optics engineers at the DRS Technologies Inc. Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition (RSTA) segment in Melbourne, Fla., will design and build a handheld laser sensor for U.S. Special Operations forces to verify that the 1064-nanometer infrared laser beam from the Handheld Laser Marker (HLM) is on target. The HLM is a lightweight system that marks targets for laser-guided munitions. DRS RSTA engineers won a potential $40.2 million five-year contract Wednesday for the Spot on Target (SPOTR) system to verify the effectiveness of the Handheld Laser Marker in difficult conditions such as dark nights or urban terrain.

WASHINGTON, 21 Dec. 2011. U.S. Navy leaders needed an electronics contract manufacturing specialist to build signal data processor-Sierra (SDP-S) systems for the Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC) program, which blends radar information from several different Navy systems to create one common air defense tactical display, or "air picture," which is based on all sensor data available. They found their solution from Sechan Electronics Inc., Lititz, Pa. Officials of U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington awarded Sechan a $64.2 million contract Monday to manufacture (SDP-S) production units and engineering support services for the CEC program.

L-3 WESCAM, a designer and manufacturer of stabilized, multi-spectral airborne imaging systems, has received an order from Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Investments Co. LLC (ADASI) for eight of its MX-10 electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) imaging systems. The turrets, to be employed on the S-100 unmanned aircraft system (UAS) platform, will assist with surveillance duties. Deliveries will begin in December 2011 and will be completed by March 2012.

HAIFA, ISRAEL, Oct 26, 2011. ElbitSystems Ltd. (NASDAQ and TASE: ESLT) announced today that its Brazilian subsidiary, AEL Sistemas S.A. ("AEL"), was awarded by a subsidiary of EMBRAER S.A., EMBRAER Defense and Security, development contracts to provide three additional systems, valued at $25 million for the new KC-390 military transport and refuel jet.

MCLEAN, Va., 16 Oct. 2011. Biometrics identification experts at the Northrop Grumman Corp. (NYSE:NOC) Information Systems segment in McLean, Va., and teammate IntegenX Inc. in Pleasanton, Calif., will supply the IntegenX RapidHIT 200 Human DNA Identification System to the U.S. Army Biometrics Identity Management Agency in Washington as part of the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Biometrics Operations and Support Services -- Unrestricted (BOSS-U) contract, which the companies won this month.



Army and Marine Corps choose SINCGARS ground-mobile antennas from ITT Corp.

CLIFTON, N.J., 14 Oct. 2011. U.S. Army and Marine Corps communications experts needed ground-mobile antennas for the Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System (SINCGARS). They found their solution from the ITT Corp. Electronic Systems segment in Clifton, N.J. ITT won a $69 million contract to provide SINCGARS ground mobile antennas. The SINCGARS ground mobile antenna is for military applications and is mounted to a spring assembly that absorbs shock and vibration. The antenna is also available in a tripod version, which can be deployed on ground-mobile vehicles or fixed sites.

Avionics displays and processing units for Zeppelin NT airships to be provided by Barco

KORTRIJK, Belgium, 12 Oct. 2011. Airship designers at Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH (ZLT) in Friedrichshafen, Germany, needed engine indicating and crew alerting system (EICAS) displays and processing units for three Zeppelin NT lighter-than-air inflatable airships. They found their solution from Barco NV in Kortrijk, Belgium. Barco will provide ZLT with the Barco CHDD-268 cockpit head down display, which has sunlight-readable AMLCD and LED backlight technology, and the PU-2000 multi-capability processing unit. The Zeppelin NT is a class of semi-rigid airships for passenger pleasure rides, aerial advertising, photography and television at major events, and research missions for environmental observations and troposphere research. The Zeppelin NT can stay aloft for as long as 24 hours.

Color helmet-mounted display for Air Force CV-22 tiltrotor special-ops aircraft to come from Elbit Systems

FORT WORTH, Texas, 5 Oct. 2011. Military avionics experts at Elbit Systems of America LLC in Fort Worth, Texas, will supply the U.S. Air Force with the CV-22 Color Helmet Mounted Display for crews of the Air Force Special Operations Command CV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft. Elbit engineers will couple helmet display and tracking system technology with color symbology to design the CV-22 helmet-mounted display system for day and night missions, Elbit officials say. The new helmet-mounted displays will help provide special operations with situational awareness by enabling them to fly their tiltrotor aircraft while looking out the windshield and windows most of the time, rather than staring at cockpit instruments.
