Experts at DY 4 Systems in Kanata, Ontario, needed a real-time operating system for their SVME/DMV-177 single-board computer for harsh-environment applications. They found their answer with LynxOS 2.5.1 from Lynx Real-Time Systems Inc. in San Jose, Calif.

LynxOS is a standard real-time UNIX system and delivers excellent performance, says Duncan Young, director of marketing at DY 4. It is the system of choice for "many of our customers," Young adds.

LynxOS 2.5.1 is a POSIX-conforming, multiprocess, and multithreaded operating system designed for complex, real-time applications that require fast, deterministic response. The familiar UNIX look and feel of the LynxOS software development environment will shorten product development cycles and lower costs for embedded VMEbus systems, claim DY 4 officials.

LynxOS provides a native development environment, as well as a traditional cross-development environment. The self-hosted, native tools support software development and debugging directly on the DY 4 board.

DY 4`s SVME/DMV-177 combines a 100 MHz PowerPC 603e RISC microprocessor with as much as 64 megabytes of DRAM with EDAC, to achieve high performance and maintain low power consumption. The board also delivers as much as 10 megabytes of Flash EPROM and 256 kilobytes of EEPROM.

LynxOS 2.5.1 provides all the benefits of LynxOS without giving up the power of DY 4`s standard foundation firmware, which includes card-level diagnostics built-in-test software. LynxOS also offers a driver interface so developers can create integrated systems using cards such as DY 4`s SVME/DMV-783 graphics controller, a dual-output graphics card with sensor video overlay features.

Lynx distributes a standard operating system package compatible with DY 4`s SVME/DMV-177. The 177 board also is part of Lynx`s Custom Board Support Program, designed to provide direct software support to the end-user. - J.M.
