Navy to increase realism in anti-submarine warfare (ASW) flight simulators for P-8A and MH-60R
ORLANDO, Fla., 26 July 2016. Simulation and training experts at Advanced Acoustic Concepts LLC in Hauppauge, N.Y., will upgrade flight simulators for the U.S. Navy P-8A Poseidon and MH-60R Seahawk anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft under terms of a $13.8 million contract announced Monday.
The upgrades are expected to enhance the realism of the aircraft simulators to emulate more closely what P-8A and MH-60R flight crews will see during actual ASW operations at sea.
Officials of the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division in Orlando, Fla., are asking Advanced Acoustic Concepts to carry out the Common Acoustic Simulation Environment Fidelity Implementation (CASE-FI) upgrades in support of the P-8A fixed-wing maritime patrol aircraft and the and MH-60R ASW helicopter.
The Fidelity Improvement program to the Common Acoustic Simulation Environment (CASE) will provide an underwater ASW game space where physics based modeling represents targets, sensors, the ocean environment, and the propagation and reverberation of sound energy in sea water for ASW flight simulators.
CASE-FI will provide P-8A and MH-60R tactical operational flight trainers (TOFTs) and weapons tactics trainers (WTTs) with high-fidelity improvements to the ASW tactical environment.
The idea is to enable a marked improvement in trainer fidelity and training effectiveness by narrowing the gap between the physics-based ocean environmental simulation and those seen during real world at-sea operations, Navy officials say.
Navy officials awarded the contract to Advanced Acoustic Concepts sole-source because the company is the original equipment manufacturer of the CASE unit and software, and is the only company able to provide CASE to the government.

On this contract Advanced Acoustic Concepts will do the work in Hauppauge, N.Y.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Md.; and St. Louis, and should be finished by February 2022.
