The new class 3 electronic flight bag (EFB) from Astronautics Corporation of America -- the NEXIS -- now has a launch operator that will first use the NEXIS on the A320 aircraft, said Eyton Zelazo, business development manager at Astronautics, today at the Paris Air Show. Astronautics is demonstrating the NEXIS at Hall 6, Booth A32 .A key feature of the Nexis is The NEXIS Flight-Intelligence System is that it runs Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) applications from ACSS in Phoenix, Zelazo says. "Under the FAA's better equipped better served philosophy that is starting to get some traction, ADS-B-equipped aircraft are expected to get priority landing privileges at congested airports."The device runs Astronautics' DO-178-certified Linux Operating System, and can host a wide range of certified applications, such as the SafeRoute suite of ADS-B applications from ACSS . Such applications include displaying traffic information, enhanced en-route situational awareness, enhanced capability for visual separation on approach, more optimized flight level changes in remote oceanic areas, in-trail procedures, optimized spacing intervals, enhanced optimized profile descents and arrivals, and enhanced airport surface situational awareness and future applications like closely spaced parallel operations. These applications are jointly developed with ACSS. Other applications provided with the NEXIS include Enroute moving map with own-ship position, developed in conjunction with L-3 Avionics Systems, which use Jeppesen, LIDO, or NAVTECH databases. In addition, Astronautics offers document readers, specific aircraft performance applications, as well as airline generated non-certified applications. The NEXIS, with its ability to support certified and uncertified applications, is designed to meet Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Eurocontrol initiatives, including the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) and CASCADE programs. The NEXIS uses a single Intel Core i7 processor, with an industrial grade solid-state hard drive and 4 gigabytes of RAM memory. The NEXIS EFB is certifiable to a wide range of DO-160F standards similar to normal aircraft avionics, according to the company release. It uses light-emitting diode (LED), avionics-grade glass-on-glass touchscreen technology designed for either a window or panel mount installation.
