Military and aerospace systems engineers who are looking for an electric motor for their electronic designs have a convenient way to find what they are looking for. It is called Motioneering, a Windows-based software package from Kollmorgen Motion Technologies Group in Radford, Va.

Motioneering, which is available on CD-ROM or by download from the Kollmorgen World Wide Web site, enables designers to type in the parameters of their applications. The package then goes to the Kollmorgen catalog and recommends appropriate servomotor, amplifier, and power supply for each application.

Application mechanisms that users can select include leadscrew, rack and pinion, conveyor, nip rolls, spindles, and direct-drive rotary and linear devices. Motion profiles include simple triangle, trapezoidal, and custom-built for flexibility in the number and type of segments defined.

Motioneering`s database of motor types includes DC servo, brushless servo, direct-drive linear, direct-drive rotor, and vector AC.

A key feature of the software is its project approach, which combines several axes of motion and their product solutions. This enables users to calculate power supply and shunt regeneration based on the simultaneous operation of several axes. The tool also features an algorithm that simulates the foldback circuitry of the amplifier. - J.K.
