ALISO VIEJO, Calif., 14 Sept. 2012. Microsemi Corp. in Aliso Viejo, Calif., is working together with Emcraft Systems LLC in Oceanside, Calif., to provide a miniaturized system-on-module (SOM) for embedded computing applications.

The SOM has Microsemi's SmartFusion customizable system-on-chip (cSoC) and pre-loaded, royalty-free uClinux in a 30-by-57-millimeter package to enable systems designers to reduce engineering and manufacturing complexities, Microsemi officials say.

Microsemi's SmartFusion cSoC integrates a field programmable gate array (FPGA), ARM Cortex-M3 processor ,and programmable analog on one chip. The uClinux kernel and applications execute on the 100 MHz 32-bit ARM core, while the integrated SmartFusion peripherals, FPGA fabric, and programmable analog blocks implement communications interfaces and protocols.

The integrated SOM includes 16 megabytes of random access memory, eight megabytes of flash, an Ethernet PHY, clocks and supporting circuitry. Additional features include single 3.3-volt power supply; serial console interface; 802.3 Ethernet interface; watchdog timer; real-time clock; and uncommitted SmartFusion interfaces, including 90 FPGA I/Os, on the interface connectors.
