MIDDLETON, Wis., 16 July 2013. Extreme Engineering Solutions Inc. (X-ES) in Middleton, Wis., is introducing the XCalibur1840 6U OpenVPXembedded computing board with the Freescale QorIQ T4240 or T4160 communications processor for platforms with stringent size weight and power (SWaP) restrictions.

Freescale's Power Architecture e6500-based T4240 and T4160 processors combine several 1.8 GHz dual-threaded cores, large caches, and high-performance networking capabilities with the next-generation AltiVec single-instruction several-data (SIMD) engine to provide high-performance processing for control and data plane tasks from one system on a chip (SoC).

Freescale's next-generation AltiVec processor delivers DSP-level floating-point performance with 172 billion floating point operations per second of vector processing capability, while maintaining compatibility with AltiVec software libraries.

The XCalibur1840 can be built to support either the T4240 or T4160 processor. When configured for the T4240, the board make the most of total processing performance with 12 dual-threaded physical cores or as many as 24 virtual cores. The T4160 provides a low-power solution with eight dual-threaded physical cores or as many as 16 virtual cores.

The board provides several high-performance I/O interfaces, including sixteen lanes of Gen 2 PCI Express, four Gigabit Ethernet Interfaces, and front panel or backplane 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports.

The board supports two XMC or PMC modules for I/O and processing flexibility, and it includes as much as 24 gigabytes of DDR3 ECC SDRAM across three channels. The board is available in either conduction-cooled or air-cooled versions and supports 0.8- or 1-inch pitch 2 level maintenance (2LM) configurations.
