WARREN, Mich. –Military vehicles designers at AM General LLC in South Bend, Ind., will as many as 11,560 High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) expanded capacity vehicles (ECV) for U.S. military allies under terms of a $2.2 billion contract announced last week.

The HMMWV ECV provides larger payload capacity than previous versions of the HMMWV to enable use of larger and heavier communications shelters, as well as improved armor protection for scouts, military police, security police, and explosive ordnance disposal platforms.

This HMMWV (pronounced "humvee") order is for foreign military sales customers worldwide with the first order for Afghanistan. The contract, from the U.S. Army Contracting Command in Warren, Mich., also calls for AM General to provide optional equipment and contractor-unique spare parts packages.

The AM General HMMWV has been in U.S. military service since 1989, performing a wide variety of light tactical vehicle duties like TOW missile carriers, ambulance, armament and cargo carrier, shelter carrier, and base platform.

The U.S. Army is replacing its fleet of HMMWVs with the Oshkosh Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV). Sales to U.S. allied military forces is today's most promising military market for the HMMWV.

The HMMWV ECV variant provides protection against 7.62-millimeter armor-piercing projectiles, 155-millimeter artillery air bursts, and from 12-pound anti-tank mine blasts.

On this contract AM General will do the work in various locations, and should be finished by February 2023. For more information contact AM General online at www.amgeneral.com, or the Army Contracting Command-Warren at http://acc.army.mil/contractingcenters/acc-wrn.
