Leaders of the Lithuanian military forces needed radio voice and data communications capability - particularly to send and receive e-mail over tactical battlefield radio networks. They found their answer in the wireless messaging terminal from the Harris Corp. RF Communications Division in Rochester, N.Y.
Harris RF officials recently won a $5.5 million contract from the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense for the messaging terminals, as well as for Harris Falcon II VHF and Falcon HF radios.
This equipment provides secure wireless voice and data communications, and enables users to configure the radios and wireless e-mail for vehicular, transportable, and base-station systems. The Windows-based wireless messaging terminal software runs on PCs.
Lithuanian defense officials say they chose the Harris equipment because it enables them to communicate with the militaries of 11 other NATO and Partnership for Peace countries.
Lithuanian military leaders will use the radios through all their service branches for communications from defense ministry staff level through to battalion level.
The wireless messaging terminal works automatically with Harris Falcon, Falcon II, PRC-138, and other radios. It also works with third-party radios with manual link establishment, explains Walter Monaco, the Harris RF regional manager for Europe and North Africa. - J.K.
