DOD protects uses McAfee anti-virus software

Officials at the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) in Arlington, Va., needed anti-virus security software able to work with several different operating systems to protect Department of Defense (DOD) PC users worldwide.

Total Virus Defense (TVD), by McAfee Associates in Santa Clara, Calif., met their requirements.

"We looked at virtually every anti-virus security vendor and McAfee`s Total Virus Defense was the most complete solution we found," says Mark J. Bogart, contracting officer for DISA. "McAfee`s wider operating systems coverage, and their multi-layered approach to security for client, server, and Internet gateway, combined with the ability to support us around the world, gave them the edge over their competitors."

The contract includes the U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, defense agencies, military academies, and also includes home use by DOD employees.

The components of McAfee`s TVD Suite are: VirusScan, which protects end-users` computers against viruses transmitted from floppy disks, over the Internet, and through e-mail attachments; WebShield, which protects Internet gateways from virus-infected e-mail, file transfers, and Web traffic, including Java and ActiveX applets; NetShield, which stops virus infections on file and application servers; and GroupShield, which stops viruses in the groupware systems e-mail database and e-mail attachments.
