Army advances next-generation command-and-control architecture toward operational scale

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Army is advancing its Next Generation Command and Control (NGC2) architecture toward broader implementation as the service works to create a more integrated, software-defined approach to battlefield decision-making.

Army leaders announced that NGC2 is ready to scale following operational demonstrations designed to validate the architecture’s ability to connect data, applications, and command elements across Army formations.

NGC2 is intended to establish a common data layer that enables information sharing among command systems, sensors, intelligence sources, and operational units. Rather than relying on individual mission command systems operating through separate data environments, the architecture is designed to allow applications and users to access shared battlefield data.

The effort supports the Army’s modernization objective of enabling distributed operations against technologically advanced adversaries, where command posts, networks, and communications systems may face disruption from electronic warfare, cyber threats, and long-range fires.

Field testing

The Army has been evaluating NGC2 through operational exercises involving units including the 4th Infantry Division and 25th Infantry Division. Those demonstrations have focused on validating data integration, software applications, and the ability to provide commanders with a more complete operational picture.

A central element of NGC2 is a shift from hardware-centric command-and-control systems toward a data-centric architecture based on open and modular software capabilities. The approach is intended to enable faster integration of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, advanced sensors, and edge computing capabilities.

The Army has worked with industry partners to develop the NGC2 common data baseline, including efforts focused on data integration, software deployment, and data federation. The work is intended to provide a foundation for connecting existing Army mission command capabilities with new software applications and future battlefield technologies.

NGC2 represents a move toward the computing and networking infrastructure required for future military operations. The architecture will require resilient tactical communications, ruggedized edge processing, secure data exchange, and systems capable of operating in contested electromagnetic environments.

The Army’s challenge will be integrating NGC2 capabilities with existing command-and-control systems while maintaining interoperability across Army formations and joint forces.
