Iris Technology introduces rugged power management adapter for AN/PRC-163 radio
IRVINE, Calif. - Iris Technology in Irvine, Calif., introduced the Merlin Handheld+, a rugged handheld radio power and data adapter designed to simplify power management and cable integration for the AN/PRC-163 tactical radio in dismounted special operations applications.
The Merlin Handheld+ is designed to address operational challenges associated with integrating the AN/PRC-163 into Nett Warrior configurations involving end-user devices, Red/Black data separation, mission accessories, and external power management.
According to Iris Technology, the device combines integrated power scavenging, hot-swap battery capability, and mission-configurable cable architecture in a compact form factor intended to reduce cable burden and extend radio operating time during field operations.
The adapter automatically draws power from approved external power sources when available, allowing operators to extend radio runtime while simultaneously charging connected batteries. The company says the approach can reduce dependence on battery resupply during extended missions.
The Merlin Handheld+ also provides hot-swap capability intended to maintain communications and cryptographic operation during battery replacement by bridging redundant power sources during transitions.
The system supports multiple operational configurations, including radio-only power operation, integration with end-user devices, standard Nett Warrior configurations with Red/Black separation, and expanded Nett Warrior configurations supporting secondary communications equipment or power scavenging functions.
Iris Technology says the device attaches directly to the radio and battery pack without tools or modifications and does not require changes to radio waveforms or operational procedures.
The company says the Merlin Handheld+ was designed to comply with MIL-STD-810H environmental requirements and MIL-STD-461G electromagnetic interference standards.
In addition to the AN/PRC-163, the system is intended to support radios from L3Harris Technologies, Persistent Systems, Silvus Technologies, Thales, TrellisWare Technologies, and Viasat.
The product is aimed at military acquisition and integration organizations, including U.S. Special Operations Command, U.S. Army PEO Soldier, Army Futures Command, Marine Corps Systems Command, Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic/Pacific, and Naval Air Systems Command.
The Merlin Handheld+ is intended to increase dismounted communications endurance while simplifying tactical power and cable management for deployed operators.
