Designers at Catalina Research Inc. in Colorado Springs, Colo., have chosen a new digital signal processor (DSP) from the Butterfly line of Sharp Microelectronics Technology Inc. of Camas, Wash., to power their new Gemini processing board for such applications as radar, sonar, digital filtering, communications, image processing, spectrum analysis, and electronic warfare.

The Gemini board is a dual-stage vector processing Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) board that fits into a single 6U VME slot. The board uses two parallel DSP BDSP9124s to sustain a 1K complex FFT at 27.3 microseconds - at a continuous 37.5 megasample per second complex data rate. This speed permits real-time processing of radar, video, RF, and medical imaging signals.

In explaining the choice of the Butterfly DSP, Michael Bonato, director of marketing at Catalina, notes, "Our Gemini board packs a lot of vector processing power into a single slot, and remains extremely straightforward to use." - J.R.
