Octal Sharc PMC module provides real-time data transfer

Engineers at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory`s (NRL) Optical Sciences Division in Washington, need a lot of processing power for a missile warning system for tactical Navy aircraft. The infrared countermeasures system provides missile detection, tracking, and threat jamming for the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 E/F, says Jack Mateosky, electrical engineer at NRL.

To meet the need, Mateosky chose the MM-11 Octal Sharc PCI mezzanine card from CSPI in Billerica, Mass.

"I was looking for a DSP that was mounted and configured as a PMC module," Mateosky says. "They`re [CSPI] the only ones I know of that do it that had a product at the time I was looking. And so far, it`s done everything they`ve advertised it would do."

Mateosky says the MM-11 octal board is perfect for his missile warning application, which uses six infrared sensors mounted on the fuselage to transfer data in realtime to an image processor containing the board. With eight processors, he dedicates each sensor to a DSP creating six independent processing channels. The two remaining DSPs on the board are for ancillary processing.

In addition, it plugs into a PMC slot on a ruggedized Radstone PowerPC PPC604 board and offers real-time support functions in a single-slot solution.

While the CSPI MM-11 is air cooled, Mateosky says he is looking to get it ruggedized for a conduction-cooled environment. "I think there`s some interest there," he says.- K.S.
