ST. LOUIS, 18 Aug. 2005. Systems designers at the Boeing Co. in St. Louis are modeling, simulating, and designing a training system for the U.S. Navy EA-18G Growler carrier-based electronic warfare jet.
The EA-18G, which uses the Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornet platform, is to replace the Navy's fleet of EA-6B Prowler airborne electronic warfare aircraft.
The EA-18G has the same AN/ALQ-99 tactical jamming system pods and two-seat concept as the EA-6B. The ALQ-99 jammer is from the EDO Corp. Defense Systems division in North Amityville, N.Y.
The Growler aircraft, to be fielded by 2008, is to perform electronic surveillance and attack of enemy threat radars and communications networks.
Boeing is developing the training system under terms of an $8.3 million contract modification awarded Aug. 17 from the Naval Air Systems Command at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Md. The contract number is N00019-04-C-0005.
