Green Hills unveils tiny-footprint real-time operating system

SAN JOSE, Calif., 5 April 2006. Leaders of Green Hills Software Inc. in Santa Barbara, Calif., unveiled a tiny-footprint real-time operating system (RTOS) called Micro-velOSity this week at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose, Calif.

SAN JOSE, Calif., 5 April 2006. Leaders of Green Hills Software Inc. in Santa Barbara, Calif., unveiled a tiny-footprint real-time operating system (RTOS) called Micro-velOSity this week at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose, Calif.

The Micro-velOSity RTOS (brand name µ-velOSity) has a ROM footprint as small as 1,600 bytes, RAM footprint as small as 1,000 bytes, and service call times as low as 30 cycles. The RTOS is for resource-constrained embedded devices.

"Micro-velOSity is an important part of our vision for a compatible technology that spans from the most deeply embedded, cost-sensitive devices to high-end, reliability-critical systems," says David Kleidermacher, vice president of engineering at Green Hills.

Complete source code is included, as is MULTI's kernel-aware debugging, project creation wizard, and TimeMachine integration device software. Micro-velOSity boots in less than 1500 processor cycles, making it suitable for consumer electronics and other devices that have an "instant-on" requirement.

The RTOS is delivered as a library and is scaled down to include only services that are actually used. Micro-velOSity also is royalty-free.

Micro-velOSity is available ARM technology, PowerPC host processors, and ColdFire embedded controllers
