BIttWare announced at AUVSI's Unmanned Systems North America 2010 the release of their 4S-XMC (4SXM), the next member of the company's S4 family of board-level signal processing solutions which leverage Altera Corp.'s Stratix IV family of field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). The board is designed for network-centric application development. The XMC uses the Altera Stratix IV GX FPGA to provide reconfigurable high performance signal processing, while four small form-factor pluggable (SFP) transceivers enable support of virtually any serial communication standard, including Fibre Channel, Gigabit Ethernet, SONET, CPRI, and OBSAI. The four SFP SerDes channels are connected directly to the on-board Altera Stratix IV GX FPGA which handles the higher level communications protocols. The 4SXM provides scalable FPGA-based signal processing for VME, VXS, VPX, CompactPCI, AdvancedTCA, and PCI Express systems with extreme bandwidth requirements, all in a low-power, compact form-factor."We've seen many applications requiring high-end signal processing coupled with high-speed serial I/O. The logical solution was to combine an extremely dense FPGA -- the Stratix IV GX, with multiple SFP transceivers," says Ron Huizen, vice president of technology for BittWare. "We took that solution one step further with the very versatile XMC platform. The result is a compact, low-power board that easily adds powerful signal processing capabilities and reconfigurable serial communication to any carrier in your system."The 4SXM is compatible with BittWare's GTV6 or any other standard VME, VXS, VPX, CompactPCI, AdvancedTCA, or PCI Express carrier board equipped with an XMC interface. The board complies with the VITA 42.0 XMC standard, the VITA 42.2 Serial RapidIO standard, and the VITA 42.3 XMC PCI Express Protocol standard. The primary XMC connector (J15) provides eight SerDes lanes directly to the Stratix IV GX, while XMC J14 provides 44 general-purpose digital I/O signals to the FPGA.The 4SXM is available now and priced at under $5,000 in OEM quantities.
