CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., 3 Dec. 2010. GE Intelligent Platforms in Charlottesville, Va., is introducing the PPC10A rugged 6U VMEsingle-board computer based on the Freescale Semiconductor QorIQ P4080 eight-core processor for harsh-environment applications in aerospace, defense, and commercial embedded computing.

One PPC10A computer board containing several processors can replace existing systems that use several CPU boards to save space and weight. The PPC10A supports symmetric- and asymmetric multiprocessing. The PPC10A has either eight or four e500mc cores, each operating as fast as 1.5 GHz.

Five levels of ruggedization are available, as are two XMC/PMC sites and an Additional Flexible Interface Extension (AFIX) site. GE's AFIX accommodates SCSI, VGA/graphics, digital IO, 1553, and Flash drive; customer-specific variants also are possible. The computer board "will be enormously attractive to existing VMEbus users as they look to increase performance," says Richard Kirk, product manager at GE Intelligent Platforms.

The PPC10A also provides two Gigabit Ethernet ports (with an additional two ports optionally available), two Serial ATA ports, two USB 2.0 ports (three additional USB 2.0 ports are optionally available) and 31 GPIO ports. Software support includes BIT and BCS test software, VxWorks, Wind River Hypervisor, Linux, and Integrity.
