FREMONT, Calif., 6 April 2007. Elma Electronic Inc. in Fremont, Calif., is offering a second-generation AdvancedTCA system platform for carrier-grade applications. The chassis is designed for full NEBS compliance and has several design features.

To meet the cooling demands of ATCA applications of 200 Watts per slot and as much as 250 Watts per slot, Elma has optimized the cooling of its new 13U chassis. The unit has gone through advanced thermal simulation and testing and meets the requirement of at least 20 to 30 percent airflow in each of the four regions of the ATCA blade.

This ensures even airflow distribution and helps to prevent hot spots. The chassis is cooled via three individually removable fan trays. Each tray has two 250-to-420-cubic-feet-per-minute airflow fans with pulse width modulation control.

A honeycomb air filter below the fans maximizes air intake while a NEBS-compliant air filter above the fans ensures even air distribution. The fans are also positioned to provide as much as 140 cubic feet per minute airflow over the rear transition modules.

Other features of the carrier-grade ATCA Chassis include rear I2C-enabled dual 50-amp power entry modules per segment (A and B), and optional PEMs with an integration circuit breaker. The chassis is RoHS compliant with an attractive black finish over the steel construction.

All field replaceable units such as the fan trays and PEMS, come with indicator LEDs. The unit also features front and rear cable management brackets.

The Carrier-grade ATCA Chassis has a 14-slot dual-star backplane (mesh versions available upon request). The backplane has connectors for full pluggability and redundancy. The slot 0 of the backplane allows redundant shelf managers to be plugged in, saving space. The backplane has been optimized for performance via signal integrity studies.

Elma also offers ATCA system platforms in 2U, 4U, and 5U heights standard and in AC or DC versions. The company also offers backplanes, handles, panels, extender cards, and more in the AdvancedTCA format.
