Curtiss-Wright Introduces its First Intel® “Broadwell”-based Small Form Factor Rugged Mission Computer for Deployed Air and Ground Platforms
EUROSATORY 2016 (Booth #HALL 5A, Stand J761), PARIS, FRANCE – June 13-17, 2016 – Curtiss-Wright’s Defense Solutions division debuts its first quad-core, 5th generation, Intel® Core™ i7 (Broadwell) processor-based, small form factor (SFF), modular mission computer, the Parvus® DuraCOR® 80-42. Designed to address system integrator demand for high performance multi-core processing and advanced graphics capabilities in the smallest possible package, this latest addition to the popular Parvus family of SFF subsystem solutions is ideal for integrating uncompromised compute power into size, weight and power (SWaP) constrained airborne, ground and shipboard vehicles. Achieving a new level of computational and graphics performance, the DuraCOR 80-42 features an integrated Intel® Iris™ Pro Graphics GPU to support OpenGL®-based graphics-intensive applications. It also supports OpenCL™ on the 40-core GPU, providing up to 640 GFLOPS of performance for data processing-intensive applications. Its powerful Advanced Vector Extensions accelerate math-intensive algorithms. The highly rugged mission computer supports the full -40 to +71C military operating temperature range without active cooling or moving parts such as fans.
“Our newest small form factor mission computer, the Parvus DuraCOR 80-42, delivers next-generation Broadwell Intel Core i7 processing and powerful graphics in a small rugged modular chassis that can be quickly modified to platform-specific requirements with minimal or no NRE expense,” said Lynn Bamford, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Defense Solutions division. “This robust COTS solution for civil and military tactical mission processing is ideal for demanding embedded computing applications deployed on ground vehicles, fixed or rotary wing aircraft, and maritime platforms.”
Built Rugged for Demanding Environments
Like other Parvus DuraCOR products, the DuraCOR 80-42 is designed to meet extensive qualification testing, including MIL-STD- 810G, MIL-STD-461G, MIL-STD-1275D, MIL-STD-704F and RTCA/DO-160G conditions for environmental, and power (thermal, shock, vibration, dust, water, humidity, altitude, power spikes/surges,). The unit’s test regimen also includes expanded conducted/radiated emissions and susceptibility EMI qualification testing, including CS114, CS115 and CS116, to pre-validate the design and reduce risk. For demanding aircraft power transfer requirements, the unit also supports 50 ms power hold-up under MIL-STD-704 and 200 ms for DO-160. For enhanced reliability, the unit adds comprehensive built-in-test (BIT) self-diagnostics for critical failure identification and can support N+1 failover power supply redundancy requirements for mission critical applications.
About the DuraCOR 80-42
Compared to its predecessor, the DuraCOR 80-41, the DuraCOR 80-42 delivers higher computational and graphics performance, more system memory, greater data storage flexibility, and more advanced power supply features, coupled with unmatched I/O and modular expansion capabilities in the same physical footprint and connector pinout. This means that customers currently prototyping their application with a DuraCOR 80-41 have a smooth upgrade path that requires no installation or cabling changes.
The unit’s flexible, modular design is easily modified to meet unique program requirements. It supports PCIe104 and Mini-PCI Express Card expansion to enable application-specific, modified COTS (MCOTS) variants, which can be rapidly tailored through Curtiss-Wright’s Application Engineering Services without traditional NRE development fees.
Parvus: Complete Integrated Subsystem Solutions
When pre-integrated with Curtiss-Wright’s SFF network router / switch products, such as the DuraMAR 5915 Cisco IOS router, DuraNET 20-10 GbE switch, or DuraNET 30-2020 Cisco IOS switch, the DuraCOR 80-42 forms a consolidated multi-function, line-replaceable unit (LRU). One of the COTS industry’s smallest rugged mission computers, the DuraCOR 80-42 combines expanded memory (up to 32 GB), powerful graphics, and multi-core processing with ultra-reliable mechanical robustness and modular I/O expansion capabilities for demanding civil and military platforms.
