MEN Micro Inc. in Warminster, Pa., is introducing a wireless local area networking (WLAN) module for 3U CompactPCI systems that operate in harsh environmental Conditions. The FL209L operates in temperatures from -40 to 85 degrees Celsius, and can be conformal coated to protect against humidity and dust. The board also resists the affects of shock and vibration. The FL209L supports IEEE 802.11b wireless data transfers as fast as 11 megabits per second and has an output power range of 20 decibels (dBm) referenced to milliwatts. The module also has an outdoor signal range as far as 600 meters. Typical applications include transportation-particularly railway cars-that require wireless Wi-Fi connections. The FL209L comes on a PCMCIA circuit board for implementation with other types of WLAN deployments, and works with other wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, GPRS cellular, and global positioning systems. The module is based on the Prism 2.5 chipset, which includes WEP encryption and operations in the open 2.4 GHz frequency range using direct-sequence spread-spectrum technology of IEEE 802.11b.
