U.S. Navy project engineers needed commercial off-the-shelf display and data-processing systems to simulate the functions of existing shipboard tactical display consoles. They found what they were looking for in the Combat Display Emulator consoles from DRS Technologies in Parsippany, N.J.
The open-architecture display consoles primarily are for Navy shore facilities such as laboratories, aircraft-tracking sites, and training centers where experts develop applications, train personnel, and engage in surveillance operations.
DRS officials are working under a $3.8 million Navy contract extension. The display consoles are operationally identical to the Navy`s newest shipboard systems, although they cost half to one-third of what the Navy pays for mil-spec consoles, DRS officials say.
