Officials at Bombardier in Montreal needed a design tool able to shorten their development time and lower production costs for the structural, systems, test rig and assembly tooling design of their Canadair Regional Jet Series 700. The CATIA Solutions tool from Dassault Systemes in Suresnes, France, met their needs.

"Designing the aircraft within a valid and up-to-date digital context significantly reduces the costly rework caused by part interference and fit problems," explains Keith Rhodes, Bombardier Aerospace CAD/CAM director. "The CATIA digital mock-up reduces the development time required to engineer aircraft structures, while making them less costly to manufacture."

Design, analysis, and manufacturing teams can interactively access the CATIA digital mock-up, which enables them to design in context and take into account their colleagues` specifications early in the design process. Parts and tooling are then concurrently designed and updated. - J.M.
