SST to start mil-spec IC production

Leaders of the Burlington Microelectronics division of Solid State Testing Inc. in Burlington, Mass., are jumping into the mil-spec, rugged, and industrial-grade integrated circuit business in an effort to fill the void left by chip manufacturers that have stopped making mil-spec components. Burlington officials have invested "several hundred thousand dollars" on new equipment to process extended-temperature semiconductors efficiently to provide the industry with quality-tested components that have been upgraded to mil-spec or high-reliability status. "Even if a customer needs to have a component hermetically sealed in ceramic, our custom packaging division also allows us to provide this as a value-added service," says David Poff, Burlington`s director of engineering.
