Engineers at Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. in Stratford, Conn., needed a low-cost recorder to handle large amounts of data for the flight test certification program of the Sikorsky S-92 Helibus helicopter. So they chose the Racal-Heim DATaRec D12 digital recorder from Racal Recorders Inc. in Irvine, Calif.

"The Racal D12 handled three to four times the data than the previous Racal Heim D4, and was less expensive than another recorder we were using," says Hank Wimbrow, chief of tests on the S-92 Helibus at Sikorsky. "It could swallow up data that would normally take multiple recorders to handle."

The DATaRec D12 digital recorder is an advanced, 12 megabits per second digital linear tape recording system designed for research and operational applications noise, vibration, harshness evaluation, missile telemetry, measurement, acoustic analysis, and sonar and radar research. Housed in a rugged air transport rack enclosure, the D12 recorder mounts easily in various military vehicles and platforms.

Racal-Heim D12 flight-test aircraft instrumentation recorders will record approximately 500 to 700 air vehicle measurements formatted into IRIG PCM at bit rates as fast as 4 megabits per second, in addition to ARINC 429 and Mil-Std 1553B avionics buses. The avionics Racal-Heim D12 recorders will record include ARINC 429, MIL 1553B, CSDB, and RSB avionics buses. - J.M.
