Rad-hard Air Force computer set for Cassini mission

A U.S. Air Force-designed radiation-tolerant computer similar to that developed for the recent Mars Pathfinder mission is part of the NASA Cassini mission to explore Saturn. The flight computer, a 16-bit Mil-Std 1750A microprocessor developed at the Air Force Phillips Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., will control all data telemetry between the Cassini spacecraft and ground controllers. Cassini`s computer is similar to Pathfinder`s 32-bit computer, yet controls fewer operations. - J.K
