The U.S. Air Force Standard Systems Group (SSG) at Maxwell AFB, Gunter Annex, Ala., is receiving Capability Maturity Model Level 3, which rates the organization`s ability to write effective, maintainable software as well above average. The SEI`s model is a framework for software organizations to improve the way they do business, and is set forth by the Software Engineering Institute in Pittsburgh. The SEI`s capability maturity model identifies key process areas in five successive levels. Level 1 describes software process activities as "ad hoc," while Level 2 establishes policies and procedures for managing software projects. Level 3 documents and carries out software engineering and management processes across entire organizations. Levels 4 and 5 involve software management and optimization. - J.K.
