WASHINGTON, 2 Sept. 2005. Concerns about homeland security will generate $3 billion in business for designers of nuclear screening portals over the period from 2006 to 2010, according to a report from the analyst firm Homeland Security Research Corp.
Four years after the terror attacks of 9/11, the U.S. market is ready for the deployment of second-generation nuclear screening portal technologies, including product procurement and services, the report says.
It cites two factors leading to an accelerated deployment of nationwide networks of nuclear portals -- a renewed focus on nuclear threats by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and President Bush's decision to establish the DNDO (Domestic Nuclear Detection Office).
The office's mission is to "develop, acquire and support deployment and improvement of a domestic system to detect and report attempts to import, assemble or transport a nuclear explosive device, fissile or radiological material intended for illicit use."
