Leuven, Belgium, 11 June 2008. Luciad, a software provider for high-performance visualization of geospatial information, has signed an important contract for the development of a SUA (Special Use Airspace) editor with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the agency responsible for the safety of civil aviation in the U.S. The system will support AIXM 5, the new global aeronautical data interchange standard.
The FAA has awarded a contract to Luciad to prototype a Web-based editor for special use airspaces (SUAs). This contract builds on Luciad's proven track record of providing software solutions to large system integrators and Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs).
The FAA uses a variety of systems to manage SUAs and Air Traffic Control Assigned Airspaces (ATCAAs), airspaces set aside for military and other types of training exercises. As part of a System-Wide Information Management (SWIM) project, the FAA sought a Web-enabled solution that enables users to add data to the static SUA and ATCAA repository and communicate status changes to those airspaces to the operational systems in an Aeronautical Information Exchange Model (AIXM) format.
To build its prototype, the FAA purchased LuciadMap, Luciad's out-of-the-box software platform for ATC/ATM, extended with the Lucy application component. LuciadMap offers the unique ability to combine geographic data from different data sources into one coherent view, and the world's first available commercial implementation of AIXM 5, the new global Aeronautical Information Exchange Model standard defined jointly by the FAA and Eurocontrol. Next to this, LuciadMap comes with geodetic 2D capabilities and offers flexible deployment using a Web browser interface.
