BURLINGTON, Mass., 7 Nov. 2006. Engineers at the Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems in Tewksbury, Mass., needed software middleware for development and deployment in the U.S. Navy's DDG 1000 Zumwalt-class destroyer. They found their solution from PrismTech in Burlington, Mass.

PrismTech is providing its OpenFusion RTOrb Java Edition CORBA middleware to Raytheon to provide a unified COTS-based solution for integrating diverse distributed systems on the DDG 1000 program.

Raytheon will incorporate OpenFusion RTOrb Java Edition in its implementation of the Total Ship Computing Environment Infrastructure (TSCEI) -- an integrated suite of standardized, open architecture hardware, operating system, middleware and infrastructure services.

Developed for the U.S. Navy by Raytheon and its subcontractors, TSCEI forms the backbone of the Navy's Total Ship Computing Environment -- an enterprise-network computing system on which all DDG 1000 application software programs run.

Formerly known as the DD(X) destroyer program, DDG 1000 Zumwalt is the lead ship of a class of next-generation multi-mission destroyers tailored for land attack and littoral dominance. DDG 1000 will provide forward presence and deterrence, and operate as an integral part of joint and combined expeditionary forces. Raytheon serves as the prime mission systems equipment integrator for the DDG 1000 program.

"Selection of PrismTech is a great example of how DDG 1000 is executing the Navy's Open Architecture (OA) strategy," says Ed Geisler, vice president and DDG 1000 program manager for Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems. "From a technical perspective, DDG 1000 uses a modular architecture that is based on open standards. The RTOrb product fits well with that architecture."

PrismTech's OpenFusion RTOrb Java Edition CORBA middleware provides real-time and non-real time functionality, based on open industry standards governed by the Object Management Group (OMG).
