NEWPORT NEWS, Va., 28 July 2007. Northrop Grumman Corp. won a research contract from the U.S. Navy to develop advanced technologies for current and future submarines.

Northrop Grumman's Newport News, Va., sector is the prime contractor for the work, which is worth $16.9 million, with an option for $5 million more over the next year.

The contract involves technologies such as external torpedo launchers, and electric ship systems to replace current hydraulic systems. Work may be on the Cutthroat (LSV2) -- a scaled-down submarine test vehicle used to evaluate new concepts.

In July 2006, Northrop Grumman was awarded the original contract of approximately $1 million to begin research and development. For more information contact Northrop Grumman online at www.northropgrumman.com.
