CLIFTON, N.J., 3 Nov. 2005. ITT Industries Avionics Division of Clifton, N.J., won a $41.9 million order to build the AN/ALQ-211 Suite of Integrated Radio Frequency Countermeasures (SIRFC) for the MH-47 heavy-lift helicopter, which is specially adapted for special operations.

The order, awarded Nov. 2, is to support the U.S. Special Operations Command's Technology Applications Contracting Office at Fort Eustis, Va.

SIRFC is an integrated system that defends against a wide variety of radar-guided missiles that operate in the active, pulse, monopulse, and continuous wave radar modes.

The system is for scout/attack, utility, cargo, special operations, and special electronic mission aircraft.

SIRFC consists of three subsystems: Advanced Threat Radar Jammer (ATRJ); Advanced Threat Radar Warning Receiver (ATRWR); and Advanced Airborne Radio Frequency Expendables (AARFE).

The system can operate either in automatic or manual (command) mode. It provides warning (situational awareness), active jamming (self protection), and when necessary expendable countermeasures to defeat radar guided weapons such as surface to air missiles (SAMs) and anti-aircraft artillery (AAA).

The eventual integration of SIRFC with the Suite of Integrated InfraRed CounterMeasures (SIIRCM) is to optimize multi-spectral threat countermeasures.

The MH-47 Special Operations Aircraft (SOA), meanwhile, is a long-distance, heavy-lift helicopter with aerial refueling capability and a fast-rope rappelling system. The helicopter conducts overt and covert infiltrations, exfiltrations, air assault, resupply, and sling operations over a wide range of environmental conditions.

ITT will do the work on the latest contract in Clifton, N.J.; Norcross, Ga.; and Landsdale, Pa. The work should be finished by November 2008. The contract number is H92241-06-D-0001.
