LANCASTER, Pa., 12 May 2005. U.S. Army Aviation has awarded Innovative Concepts, Inc. a contract to develop the next generation of the Improved Data Modem (IDM) Army Operational Flight Program Software Version 8.1. The $8.5 million first-year option increases the original five-year contract to $17.1 million.

Army Aviation uses IDM V303/IDM V304 to provide digital connectivity among airborne and ground platforms using existing radios and crypto equipment.

The IDM is a lightweight, six-channel tactical modem/router that provides the critical data link required between ground and Army Aviation units. It also provides the vital air-to-air transmission of target data between IDM- equipped attack aircraft. This air-to-air data communications allows the flight leader to assign individual targets to members of the flight as well as to collect and assess battle damage reports.

The U.S. Army has designated IDM Technology for installation on every helicopter in the Army inventory, including the Apache Longbow, Kiowa Warrior, Chinook, and Blackhawk. IDM Technology has been successfully employed in Operation Enduring Freedom and in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The IDM is also deployed on several foreign platforms worldwide providing interoperability with coalition forces.

"Interconnectivity requirements continue to be an area of emphasis for the U.S. military. Innovative Concepts is a proven contributor of tactical data communications and is positioned to continue its leadership position in next generation data link technologies," said John M. Kelley, Herley president.
