L-3 boosts expertise in electronic warfare (EW) and RF and microwave with acquisition of Micreo
NEW YORK, 22 Sept. 2016. Executives of L-3 Communications based in New York are boosting the company's expertise in electronic warfare (EW), surveillance, and reconnaissance with their upcoming acquisition of RF and microwave specialist Micreo Limited in Eight Mile Plains, Australia, near Brisbane. Terms of the upcoming acquisition were not released.
Micreo designs and builds radio frequency (RF) microwave integrated circuits (MICs) and subsystems for global military and aerospace applications, and is a leader in EW subsystems that use high-performance microwave, millimeter wave, and photonic technologies.
Micreo, for example, is providing microwave integrated circuits for the Raytheon Co. ALR-69A(V) radar warning receiver aboard the U.S. Air Force AC-130 gunship aircraft, MC-130 Special Operations aircraft, C-130 utility turboprop aircraft, and F-16 jet fighter.
L-3 officials say they expect the acquisition to close sometime this month and will rename the company L-3 Micreo, which should generate sales of $27 million this year. Micreo was founded in 2002 and employs 72 people.
Micreo's expertise in high-performance microwave, millimeter wave, and photonic technology will complement L-3’s wide range of sensors and will strengthen L-3’s future products in the higher EW RF bandwidth, L-3 officials say.

Micreo's unique patented products are market-ready not only for EW applications, but also for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) products. L-3 officials say. Micreo also has counter-improvised explosive device (IED) capabilities that will enhance L-3’s existing range of man-portable and vehicle electronic countermeasures (ECM) equipment.
“As part of L-3, Micreo will expand our technical expertise and offerings, providing immediate synergies with L-3 products as well as adjacent growth opportunities across our existing business,” says Michael Strianese, L-3’s chairman and chief executive officer.
L-3 is a top provider of military and commercial communications and electronic systems, and also is a prime contractor in aerospace systems. The company reported 2015 sales of $10.5 billion.
