VPT wins platinum award for V-SHIELD epoxy encapsulated packaging for rugged power electronics
NASHUA, N.H., 8 Dec. 2016. Electronics packaging experts t VPT Inc. in Bothell, Wash., have received a platinum award in the 2016 Military & Aerospace Electronics and Intelligent Aerospace Technology Innovation Awards for the company's V-SHIELD epoxy encapsulated packaging for ruggedpower electronics components.
The award to the VPT V-SHIELD packaging is part of the top of three tiers of this year's Technology Innovation Awards. The top award level is platinum, the middle tier is gold, and the third tier is silver.
Military & Aerospace Electronics and Intelligent Aerospace made awards to company entries that offer solutions to difficult aerospace and defense electronics design challenges. The awards were presented on 14 Nov. 2016.
The V-SHIELD packaging for rugged DC-DC converters features an epoxy encapsulated packaging design that resists chemical, solvent, and salt environments. The packaging also is compatible with high-volume manufacturing processes including wave solder, cleaning solvents, high-pressure sprays, and aqueous wash processes.
V-SHIELD allows for efficient thermal performance because it is encapsulated in a thermally conductive epoxy that creates a heat path through either side of the package.

V-SHIELD enables DC-DC converters to combine reduced radiated emissions with the water and chemical resistivity of the epoxy packaging. Combining these two options provides a reasonable cost design with superior performance, VPT officials say.
V-SHIELD makes the converter suitable for rugged applications like military ground vehicles, as well as commercial and military aircraft by reducing their susceptibility to the effects of severe vibration, shock, and temperature cycling.
Designers today typically improve EMI performance by enclosing the DC-DC converter in a metal package. If the package is non-hermetic, water or solvents can leak into the package, threatening short circuits or corrosive damage. V-SHIELD packaging prevents any water or chemicals from reaching and damaging sensitive internal circuitry.
Because the DC-DC converter is fully encapsulated in a thermally conductive epoxy, there is a sufficient heat path through either side of the package. In traditional metal packaging, the only sufficient heat path is through the baseplate. Thus, V-SHIELD packaging allows for more versatile mounting options in the user’s design, VPT officials say.
