DRS Technologies to repair radar on U.S. Air Force combat Talon airplanes

PARSIPPANY, N.J., 1 August 2007. DRS Technologies Inc. has won a $7.1 million contract from the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia, to provide depot repair services for the receiver/transmitters and antenna subsystems in APQ-170 TF/TA radar systems.

PARSIPPANY, N.J., 1 August 2007. DRS Technologies Inc. has won a $7.1 million contract from the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia, to provide depot repair services for the receiver/transmitters and antenna subsystems in APQ-170 TF/TA radar systems.

The work for this one-year award will begin immediately and be performed by the company's DRS Sustainment Systems business unit in St. Louis, Missouri. Although this award is a new contract it continues 14 years of DRS repairing the APQ-170 radar system.

The AN/APQ-170 radar is a multimode, redundant, dual-band, and forward-looking radar that integrates terrain-following and terrain-avoidance features, as well as ground-mapping, weather detection and avoidance, and beacon interrogation modes of operation. It was specifically developed for the Air Force's MC-130H Combat Talon II airplane.

With this radar system and a specially trained Air Force crew the aircraft can operate at a low altitude and in night or adverse weather conditions. The radar's navigation and aerial delivery systems are used to locate small drop zones and deliver people or equipment with greater accuracy and at higher speeds than possible on a C-130 airplane with standard systems.

The mission of the MC-130H is to fly into well-defended areas even during rough weather and/or at low altitude to re-supply or extract special operations forces and equipment. The aircraft, along with its AN/APQ-170 radars, radomes, and computers, are supported by their own repair depots.
