Connectors for dirty and contaminated environments in military applications introduced by Aerco
Oct. 25, 2017
HORSHAM, England – The Snaptac series of circular and rectangular miniature snap fit connectors from Smiths Interconnect in Kansas City, Kan., is available from electronics distributor Aerco Ltd. in Horsham, England. These connectors are for dirty and contaminated environments, such as land-based military applications that require fast and easy mating and unmating.
The Snaptac series is an ultra-reliable, extremely hi-rel interconnect system suitable for military applications like tactical communications equipment and lightweight wearable soldier systems.
Snaptac connectors combine Smiths Interconnect's proprietary high-reliability hyperboloid contact technology in a spring-loaded form factor, enabling extended operation within a sealed while unmated connector system.
The Smiths Interconnect hyperboloid contact technology resists the effects of shock and vibration while the compressible HyperSpring spring-loaded contacts inside cannot be damaged or bent from mishandling.

Snaptac connector contacts have target-and-chisel blade contact mechanisms with an inherent self-cleaning wiping action that removes surface contamination. This helps prevent mating and connectivity problems such as mud contamination.Plug and receptacle have sealed-when-unmated characteristics.
Snaptac connectors are available as circular interconnects with 7, 13, and 19 contacts, AWG 28 -- 24 or rectangular connectors with 12, 21, and 30 contacts. Both are available with and without over-molding, plus the circular connectors also can be supplied in a 90-degree overmolded version.
Receptacle styles are solder cup, or straight through. Locking mechanisms are snap on for the circular connector range and push-pull for the rectangular range. Snaptac connectors are sealed to IP67 when in mated or unmated condition and have full-line EMI shielding, with dust caps available. They can be mated and unmated as many as 10,000 cycles. Operating temperature range is -55 to 85 degrees Celsius.
