DroneShield introduces portable RF intelligence system

RfRecon combines wideband spectrum sensing, direction finding, and artificial-intelligence-enabled signal processing in a single portable system.

WASHINGTON - DroneShield has introduced RfRecon, a portable radio-frequency intelligence system designed to detect, locate, identify, and assess activity across the electromagnetic spectrum for defense, government, and security applications.

RfRecon combines wideband spectrum sensing, direction finding, and artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled signal processing in a single portable system. The company says the system is designed to give operators information about RF activity at the tactical edge, rather than simply collecting spectrum data for later analysis.

The system is based on DroneShield's RfAI-3 intelligence architecture, which the company introduced earlier this year. RfRecon is designed to process RF information onboard and support identification and assessment of signals in operational environments.

The system incorporates direction finding as well as detection capabilities for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Remote ID, automatic identification system (AIS) signals, and automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) transmissions. It also includes integrated GNSS and hardware-based security features, according to DroneShield.

DroneShield says RfRecon provides approximately six times the RF spectrum coverage, four times the processing and AI compute, 31 times the storage, and eight times the memory of its previous solution. 

RfRecon is designed for dismounted, vehicle-mounted, expeditionary, and fixed-site operations and can exchange data with existing command-and-control systems. DroneShield says the system can integrate with the Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK), third-party command-and-control platforms, and other sensor systems.

The company also positions RfRecon as a sensor component within layered counter-uncrewed-aircraft-system architectures that can combine RF sensing with cyber takeover and kinetic defeat capabilities.

DroneShield says RfRecon will receive additional capabilities through the company's software development roadmap, allowing future RF intelligence functions to be added through software updates.
