WARREN, Mich. – U.S. Army navigation and guidance experts needed a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) inertial navigation system (INS) for a variety of military land vehicles. They found their solution from Honeywell Aerospace in Clearwater, Fla.

Officials of the Army Contracting Command in Warren, Mich., announced a $37.9 million contract to Honeywell on Thursday for the commercial Tactical Advanced Land Inertial Navigator (TALIN) 5000 inertial navigation unit.

The TALIN 5000 is built with Honeywell’s ring laser-gyro and accelerometers, and is suitable for GPS-denied environments, Honeywell officials say.

The Honeywell TALIN INS family is for military vehicles and main battle tanks, artillery systems, radar and satellite communications stabilization, missile launchers, light military vehicles, and military survey applications.

TALIN combines Honeywell’s ring laser gyro technology and accelerometers for demanding military and commercial environments without the need for secondary shock isolation. The navigational devices offer instant-on and several accuracy configurations.

The TALIN 5000 offers attitude alignment and orientation in any orientation and on-the-move; angular rate of 200 degrees per second; has mean time between failures of more than 50,000 hours; and operates on 18 to 32 volts DC at less power consumption than 26 Watts.

It requires no cooling, and operates in temperatures from -46 to 71 degrees Celsius; uses standard internal three-axis inertial sensors; interfaces to VMS, PLGR, and DAGR GPS devices; and offers modular partitioned software.

The TALIN 5000 is field-upgradable, weighs less than 13 pounds, and has interfaces to 1553A and RS-422; measures 5.4 inches by 7.6 inches by 8.6 inches; and can be hard-mounted in any orientation.

On this contract Honeywell will do the work at locations determined with each order, and should be finished by September 2023. For more information contact Honeywell Aerospace online at https://aerospace.honeywell.com.
