Longbow wins $419.6 million Army contract for Apache fire-control radars

The contract covers the AN/APG-78 Longbow Fire Control Radar, a mast-mounted millimeter-wave radar system that helps Apache aircrews detect, locate, classify, and prioritize targets.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Longbow LLC has received a $419.6 million U.S. Army contract for fire-control radar systems and post-production support for AH-64D/E Apache attack helicopters.

The $419,607,961 contract combines cost-no-fee, cost-plus-fixed-fee, and firm-fixed-price terms. The contract will determine work locations and funding as individual orders are placed, and it has an estimated completion date of 31 Jan. 2032.

The contract covers the AN/APG-78 Longbow Fire Control Radar, a mast-mounted millimeter-wave radar system that helps Apache aircrews detect, locate, classify, and prioritize targets. The radar operates in the Ka frequency band and is designed for a low probability of detection and interception.

The system supports ground, air, and maritime targeting, as well as terrain profiling and target-location cueing for the Apache's Modernized Target Acquisition Designation System. According to Northrop Grumman, the radar can detect, locate, and classify up to 256 moving and stationary targets simultaneously, prioritizing the top 16 for aircrew evaluation. The company's published specifications list a detection range of up to 16 kilometers and operation in adverse weather and battlefield obscurants.

The Longbow system also combines active radar with a passive Radar Frequency Interferometer, which detects and identifies radio-frequency emissions. Together, these sensors support target detection and situational awareness while allowing the Apache to use radar data to cue its electro-optical targeting system.

Longbow LLC is a joint venture of Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman. Army Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal, Ala., is the contracting activity (W58RGZ-27-D-A008).
