PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Meller Optics Inc. in Providence, R.I., is introducing custom-fabricated sapphire domes that can incorporate various radii for missiles and nearly flat configurations for use in gimbals and hypersonics.

These sapphire domes feature a maximum 160-degree viewing angle and resist fast moving dirt, sand, and saltwater to protect all types of guidance systems.

Providing as much as 85 percent transmission uncoated from the ultraviolet to infrared, and 99 percent transmission when A/R coated on both sides, they can be made with long radii to nearly flat for use in hypersonic weapons.

1-to-6-inch sizes

Available in sizes from 1-to-6-inch O.D., Meller sapphire domes exhibit Mohs 9 hardness which is second only to diamond and can withstand 1,000 degrees Celsius and pressure to 10,000 pounds per square inch.

Surface accuracy is to less than 1 fringe at 633 nanometers; finishes are available to 20-10 scratch-dig per MIL-PRF-13830; and mounting options can include precise edge steps and profiles.
