Sodyo introduces long-range visual identification technology for drones

RangeMark uses Sodyo's patented visual-code technology to detect a marker in a camera's field of view and decode it into a unique machine-readable identity.

TEL AVIV, Israel - Sodyo Ltd. has introduced RangeMark, a visual identification technology that enables drones and other remote systems to detect and decode passive, machine-readable markers at long range without GPS, cellular, radio-frequency, or network connectivity.

RangeMark uses Sodyo's patented visual-code technology to detect a marker in a camera's field of view and decode it into a unique machine-readable identity. The company says the system can detect markers at distances of up to 1 kilometer, although its published flight testing demonstrated detection of a 100-centimeter marker at up to 500 meters and a 50-centimeter marker at up to 250 meters.

The system is designed to supplement conventional machine vision, which can classify objects based on visual characteristics but does not necessarily provide a deterministic identity for a specific object or location. A RangeMark marker can instead provide a machine-readable reference associated with a particular asset, location, or other designated point.

Sodyo says RangeMark can operate without external connectivity because its markers are passive and require no power source or radio transmission. The company cites potential applications including navigation to designated landing zones or drop points, detection of marked assets and infrastructure, and identification of specific vehicles, locations or other mission assets.

Flight testing has included hover, transit and search-pattern operations at speeds of up to 20 meters per second, according to Sodyo. The company says testing has demonstrated long-range marker detection within a camera field of view covering approximately 20 hectares.

RangeMark supports Sodyo's Color Code visual marker format and Carbon Code, a two-tone format designed for challenging visibility conditions. The company says it is developing additional spectral formats.
