IDS Nion 3D ToF camera enters series production

The Nion is intended for applications including volume measurement, palletizing and depalletizing, logistics and robotics.

OBERSULM, Germany - IDS Imaging Development Systems GmbH has begun series production of its Nion industrial 3D time-of-flight (ToF) camera, combining 1.2-megapixel resolution with integrated depth processing for machine-vision applications in logistics, automation, and robotics.

The Nion uses onsemi's AF0130 Hyperlux ID indirect ToF (iToF) depth sensor, providing 1,280 × 960-pixel resolution and a global shutter. The sensor incorporates on-chip depth processing, generating real-time depth data without requiring external depth-processing hardware.

IDS specifies operation at up to 30 frames per second and says the camera is designed to provide stable depth data when objects are moving and lighting conditions change. The AF0130 captures the phase exposures used for iToF before readout, reducing the time window in which object movement can introduce errors between phase images.

The Nion has a working range of 0.3 to 7.5 meters and uses 940-nanometer Class 1 laser illumination. IDS specifies a 71-degree horizontal and 57-degree vertical field of view for the integrated lens. The camera's IP67-rated housing is designed for industrial environments and indoor or outdoor operation.

The camera provides power and communications through its Ethernet interface, with PoE++ support for power delivery. The camera also has M12 connectors for Ethernet and I/O. IDS specifies an operating temperature range of 0 to 35 degrees Celsius.

The Nion is intended for applications including volume measurement, palletizing and depalletizing, logistics and robotics. IDS says its depth data can also be added to existing 2D machine-vision processes where three-dimensional information can improve process decisions.
